Born on March 15, 1767 in the Waxhaw Settlement in South Carolina; though just a boy, participated in the battle of Hanging Rock during the Revolution, captured by the British and imprisoned. John Forsyth (1780-1841) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on October 22. He graduated from Princeton in 1799 and was admitted to the bar in 1802. In 1808, Forsyth became the Attorney-General of Georgia. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1828. He married Clara Meigs, daughter of Josiah Meigs, who was the first president of Franklin College (later named the University of Georgia). Forsyth died on October 21, 1841.
